Gilvesy Winery Balaton Furmint Pixu 2019
Robert has followed the natural wine movement for many years and always admired the vital energy and immediate fruit in the wines but wanted to learn to balance that youthful vitality with the precision and sense of place his wines were known for. After many years of experimentation, the PIXU wines are the realization of this goal: they’re all bottled unfiltered with low to zero added so2 added during vinification, single variety renditions of the majestic landscape of the Mount Saint George. The 2019 Furmint is a real head turner. You’ll find small ripe pears, crystalized ginger, and pink peppercorn carried on a volcanic current towards a long finish. There’s great texture and a palate coating mineral presence that’s interwoven in a delicate, weightless way. It’s a wine of quiet, confident power that’s just delicious.
Mount Saint George (Szent György-Hegy) is an ancient and little known volcanic butte in Europe’s Pannonia basin. Our estate is found here, just a few kilometers north of Lake Balaton, its roots originating in the 17th century. Mount Saint George is cloaked with vineyards, both old vines and more recent plantings, ours and many others being cultivated organically. With our vineyards and wine culture, our goal is to authentically preserve and express the unique character of the mountain in our wines.
