The parcels total about three hectares. South - Southeast orientation. Various soils - compact sand alternating with sandstone in Barolo and Castiglione Falletto, more clay with limestone in La Morra. Vineyards planted between 1980 and 1990.

Hand-harvested. Fermented for 25 to 30 days partly in cement tanks and partly in stainless steel. After the parcels are fermented separately they are assembled into 5000L casks where they age for about three years. Aged for an additional 6 months or more in bottle before release.

The wines are built for aging, these demand at least a decade to begin to soften, although it may not reach full bloom until its twentieth birthday. These wines are beautiful, classic expressions of their underlying terroirs, with well-integrated tannins, tangy acids and beautiful complexity and balance. Both improve immeasurably if decanted an hour before serving.

The 2021 growing season was warmer than average but not hot, and, importantly, it avoided the punishing heat spikes and drought stress that have defined some recent vintages. A long growing season allowed for full tannin development, while a rain-free autumn with the classic pattern of warm days and cool nights ensured the grapes continued to ripen while retaining their natural freshness. Rinaldi's 2021s have excellent aging potential. With their ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, and concentrated fruit, the foundation for long-term cellaring is firmly in place.

Francesco Rinaldi e Figli makes classic Baroli that are relative steals for great, traditional Barolo from top sites. Located in the town of Barolo itself, the domaine of Francesco Rinaldi was founded in 1870, when Giovanni Battista Rinaldi, the father of Francesco Rinaldi, inherited a vineyard and house in Barolo, inducing him to leave behind his work with the very large Mirafiore estate and set out on his own. Francesco's brother, Giuseppe Rinaldi, was the great-grandfather of Carlotta and Marta Rinaldi (the sisters currently running the Giuseppe Rinaldi winery). One hundred and thirty years later, many of the same techniques are still used in the Francesco Rinaldi cellars to produce some of Barolo’s greatest wines. Currently, the 5th generation, sisters Paola & Piera Rinaldi, run the winery. As of 2023, they are being assisted by Elisa and Francesca Rinaldi, Piera’s daughters. They continue to make beautiful wines within the great traditions of Barolo, with no new oak, long macerations, and long aging in large Slavonian oak botti before bottling. A new press is one of the only nods to modernity in these great old cellars. However, their beautiful wines have never been better than they are today.
