Organic, Practicing Biodynamic
Penedes, Spain
Founded in the 1600s, the Suriol family has occupied the Castell de Grabuac and worked the land. Phylloxera destroyed the vineyards in 1890 causing all of the vines to be replanted with American rootstock around 1900. The estate produces two labels – Suriol wines present a polished, estate-grown product while the Azimut line is a collection of easy-going fun wines made from some estate fruit as well as some neighbors’ organic grapes. Certified organic in 1996, and now works with biodynamic practices under Assís Suriol, their current winemaker.
Grapes are harvested from a 25 y/o 5 hectare plot on calcareous clay, 250m above sea level, southern exposure and Mediterranean breezes. Fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts for 30 days, then transferred to concrete tanks for 3 months for malolactic fermentation and battonage. Unfined, slightly filtered with soft paper, lightly sulfered at bottling.
